More than Gamified: Designing Educational Experiences that Encourage Play

April 17 at 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm

Room: 305A

By Michael Schmitt

In a world where we use wireless pocket computers to order and pay for coffee, many modern educational experiences are still dry, stuffy, and downright boring. Technology has changed the face of education: we have online video courses, web-based assessments, and more access to information than ever before. But, technology by itself is not a blanket solution to making learning “better”- the fact of the matter is, the core design of educational systems have failed to evolve over the years. To identify and remedy design flaws in traditional educational methods, we need to look to other fields for inspiration. We need to use a Game Designer’s eye to craft clear incentives for learning, but more importantly, for teaching. By borrowing ideas from activities that are typically classified as hobbies, we can find inspiration for making learning a lifelong activity that is a joy to partake in. In this talk, Michael will discuss why learning should be more like playing, why teachers need gamification too, and what he’s working on at Unity to address some of these issues.
