Barking up the Right Tree – An interactive workshop on the noble art of bark writing

April 17 at 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Room: 302C

By Andrew Walsh

In this interactive workshop participants will be offered the chance to write, edit, perform, or direct barks. The hour will guide attendees through the whole process of creating systemic dialogue from conception to recording and in game delivery.

With some AAA games containing tens of thousands of barks and even smaller indie games seeing the majority of their dialogue triggered systemically, ‘barks’ make up the vast amount of interactive writing.

Thinking of a 70 hour game, narrative lines will trigger only once while barks are heard hundreds of times. So, why are they are often neglected in the writing process?

Is your writing barking up the right tree? Is systemic dialogue sending you barking mad? Have you worked up your branches, but still can’t get to the root of your problem? This talk is here to help.
